Who they are
Uri Maklev is an ordained rabbi, a United Torah Judaism member of the Knesset and chairman of its faction. He came to national politics from the Jerusalem city council.
He was born in Bnei Brak in 1957 to Mordechai and Nechama Maklev, and named after his uncle Uri Maklev, an Irgun fighter killed in the War of Independence. He studied at the Tashbar Talmud Torah and then at the Kol Torah and Ponevezh yeshivas, and was ordained a rabbi. Working through Degel HaTorah, he became a deputy mayor of Jerusalem holding the education portfolio, sitting on the city executive and on the local planning and building committee.
He entered the Knesset under a rotation agreement in which Yaakov Cohen of Agudat Yisrael gave up his seat, becoming Degel HaTorah’s third member in the faction. He has served as a deputy speaker, chaired the committee on public petitions and later the Science and Technology Committee. His legislation includes a law shielding food donors and food charities from liability, sick leave for a parent whose child needs dialysis, and forty hours of paid sick leave for women undergoing fertility treatment. He initiated the government authority for Haredi economic and social development, served as a deputy transport minister and as deputy minister for Haredi affairs, and resigned in July 2025 over the conscription law.
