Who they are
Van Buren was born in Jerusalem in 1966 and joined the Armoured Corps in 1984. He studied law at Bar-Ilan University and qualified in 1995, then practised at Granot, Strauss, Gurfine. He commanded Brigade 278 from 2000 to 2004 and served as chief reserves officer from 2005 to 2008. He founded Nikraim LaDegel in 2023 and co-founded Israel Sobers Up in July 2026.
Positions and record
Gaza: In a March 2025 interview, called for holding territory and controlling aid deliveries to defeat Hamas. Proposed temporary military administration until an alternative government could be found.
Haredi enlistment: In March 2025, called for gradual universal military or national service, with benefits prioritising those who serve, especially combat soldiers. Opposed immediate compulsory enlistment as counterproductive.
Military service and protest: Opposes refusing military service for political reasons. In April 2025, called for dismissing serving reservists who signed an air-force veterans’ appeal to stop the fighting and return the hostages. The letter did not call for refusing service.
