Who they are
Born in Jerusalem in 1966, Van Buren enlisted in the Armoured Corps in 1984, commanded Brigade 278 from 2000, and was the army's chief reserves officer from 2005 to 2008 with the rank of brigadier general. He is also a lawyer, and in 2023 he founded Nikraim LaDegel, a movement set up against the reservists who refused to report during the judicial-overhaul protests. He writes a column in Israel Hayom, is a fellow at the ICGS institute, and comments on security for Channel 14. His published positions are more detailed than the party's: he argues Israel will have to go back into Gaza and hold ground under a temporary military administration, and that haredi service should become the norm gradually, through benefits rather than compulsion. His name is spelled Van Buren by the institute he is affiliated with; the Hebrew is closer to Van Biran.
Positions and record
Gaza: He wrote in March 2025 that a return is inevitable, and that it would mean a temporary military administration and holding ground rather than raiding.
Haredi enlistment: Everyone should serve, phased in through a ladder of benefits that puts combat soldiers at the top. He says forcing it immediately would produce the opposite result.
Refusing to serve: He built a movement against it in 2023, and led the campaign answering the air force veterans' letter.
