Eli Goldschmidt sat in the Knesset for Labor through the 1990s, chaired the Finance Committee, and left politics in 2001. He announced this party on 16 July 2026 with Danny Van Buren, a brigadier general in the reserves who was the army's chief reserves officer. מתפכחת means sobering up, and the list is aimed at people who voted centre or left and changed their minds after 7 October. Goldschmidt is one of them. He supported Oslo and the Gaza disengagement at the time and now calls both mistakes, says the era of Oslo's compromises is over, and wants the Green Line erased. The party pledged its support for a government led by Benjamin Netanyahu at the launch, though Goldschmidt says he turned down a reserved slot on the Likud list because he would not enter on someone else's ticket. Two names have been published, no outlet outside the right has covered it, and no pollster has measured it.
The list, who comes with them
The list is not set yet. No list has been filed and no order has been set. Goldschmidt and Van Buren are the only two names the party has published. It said at the launch that the rest of the slate would follow, and nothing has been added since. On 26 July Maariv reported that the party would merge with Moshe Green's Tzomet, with the agreement unsigned and expected to be signed that week. Neither side has confirmed it since and no other outlet has carried it. Goldschmidt says he was offered a reserved slot on the Likud list and refused it, and puts his own party's worth at four or five seats. Tzomet's internal polling puts Tzomet at about one and a half. No pollster has tested either number.
