Who they are
Yousef Jabareen is a law professor and former MK who chairs Hadash, and works on constitutional law and minority rights.
He was born in 1972 and lives in Umm al-Fahm. He read law at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, took a master’s at American University in Washington and a doctorate at Georgetown. He joined the law faculty of the University of Haifa and taught at Tel-Hai Academic College, where he headed the social education programme and was made a professor in 2026. He ran Dirasat, an Arab centre for law and policy in Nazareth, sat on the board of Sikkuy, and wrote the research behind the legal status chapter of The Future Vision of the Palestinian Arabs in Israel.
In the Knesset he founded and led lobbies on the status of the Arabic language and on shared Jewish and Arab life, and the first law he carried was an amendment to the Women’s Equal Rights Law exempting women in advanced pregnancy from queueing at public institutions. He was the first Arab MK to chair the Committee on the Rights of the Child, which under him held more than sixty sessions and approved the first uniform supervision regulations for early-childhood day care, covering private nurseries as well as those contracted to the labour and welfare ministry.
Positions and record
Equality: Proposed constitutional guarantees of full civil, cultural and national equality in 2018. Later that year, sponsored a bill to repeal the Nation-State Law.
Arab-Jewish partnership: In May 2026, called for rebuilding the Joint List and Arab-Jewish political cooperation. Rejected joining a coalition based on Jewish supremacy or exclusion of Arab citizens.
Occupation: In June 2026, called for ending the occupation, dismantling settlements and establishing a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel, with both states democratic.
Women’s representation: In May 2026, proposed changing Hadash’s rules to guarantee reserved places for women on its Knesset list.
Crime prevention: In May 2026, proposed a parliamentary inquiry into the government’s response to crime and a community volunteering programme for Arab young people, alongside training and employment.
