Zelekha has asked for this job since the day he founded the party, saying everyone else wants to be prime minister. His party has run twice and missed the threshold twice, and it polls under the bar again.
Who they are
Born in Ramat Gan in 1970 to Iraqi-Jewish immigrants, Zelekha took a doctorate in economics at Bar-Ilan and was appointed Accountant General at the Finance Ministry in 2003, at thirty-three, by Benjamin Netanyahu. He recovered 1.1 billion shekels from Israel Chemicals over underpaid royalties and blocked a bank chairman's golden parachute. He left in 2007 as a recognised whistleblower after becoming the State Comptroller's key witness against Ehud Olmert. He has headed the accounting department at Ono Academic College since 1998.
Positions and record
Monopolies: Wants exclusive importers declared monopolies with criminal liability, and the production councils dismantled.
Taxation: VAT down from eighteen percent to twelve over six years, and marginal tax capped at forty.
7 October: Attributes primary responsibility to Netanyahu as head of the system, and points at defence spending falling as a share of GDP.
