Who they are
Reuven Ohana is a Torah scholar and writer who served about twenty years in the Safed rabbinate. He grew up in a religious family of immigrants from Morocco, of a rabbinic line from Casablanca, and attended a state-religious school and a yeshiva high school before serving in a combat unit and then in the reserves, including in the Lebanon War.
After his service he turned to a haredi life. He studied at Tiferet HaCarmel, the kollel of Rabbi Refael Shapira, then settled in Safed among the first families of the Maor Chaim neighbourhood. In the city’s rabbinate he worked in the kashrut department, officiated at weddings as a volunteer and taught the Oral Law.
He has written for Torah journals for many years, among them Ohr Torah, Moriah, the medical-halachic Assia and Tenuvot Sadeh on the agricultural commandments, and is cited in the responsa of Rabbi Shalom Messas. He gives classes in synagogues and works with the elderly, and has helped immigrant families from the former Soviet Union settle in.
