Who they are
Burg is the son of Yosef Burg, a National Religious Party minister who sat in cabinet for most of the state's first four decades, and was wounded by grenade fragments at the 1983 Peace Now march where Emil Grunzweig was killed. He entered the Knesset for Labor in 1988, chaired the Jewish Agency from 1995, and was Knesset speaker from 1999 to 2003. He left politics in 2004 and has written seven books since.
Positions and record
Why he came back: He calls the last four years traumatic, the judicial overhaul and 7 October together, and says the answer is a full left rather than a wider centre.
Arab-Jewish partnership: He says the people weighing the new party are those disillusioned with the existing options and looking for a real Arab-Jewish partnership.
Burning votes: He argues the list will not waste votes, which is the charge most often aimed at a new party sitting near the threshold.
