Who they are
Tamano-Shata was born in Wuzaba, Ethiopia, on 1 November 1981 and came to Israel in Operation Moses in 1984. She served in Home Front Command and qualified as a lawyer at Ono Academic College in 2007, then covered legal affairs for Channel 1 from 2008 to 2012. She entered the Knesset with Yesh Atid in 2013 and was aliyah and integration minister from 2020 to 2022, the first Israeli minister born in Ethiopia.
Positions and record
Aliyah: Calls for faster decisions on Ethiopian immigration cases and reunification of separated families. Supports easing licensing barriers for immigrant doctors.
Equality: Opposes racial discrimination against Ethiopian Israelis in schools and policing.
Unity government: Supports a broad Zionist unity government, a position she reaffirmed in May 2026.
Women in public office: Calls for equal representation of women and men in government and other decision-making posts.
Domestic abuse: In March 2023, called for electronic monitoring to enforce protection orders. Proposed removing a wife’s murderer’s share in their joint home so it remains with her children and family.
